Project Description: The New Adult Stanford Hospital is located adjacent to the Stanford University Medical Center campus, the new facility features a flexible pavilion design with 368 patient rooms for a total of 600 patient beds. The project allows for additional single-patient rooms, which are linked to reduced infection rates.
The New Adult Stanford Hospital offers state-of-the-art imaging equipment, a new Level 1 Trauma Center emergency department, three times larger in size than the current Emergency Department, and state-of-the-art surgical, diagnostic, and treatment rooms. The hospital will sit on a base isolation system and is designed to remain functional after an 8.0 magnitude earthquake.
This new hospital project is a joint venture part of the Stanford University Medical Center Renewal Project, which also includes the expansion of Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital and replacement of School of Medicine facilities, additional parking garage, and laboratory renovations and expansion.
24 months of design development that minimized more than $20M. This significant cost savings helped to reduce the construction schedule and streamline the stamp and approved process with OSHPD. Project challenges include staging limitations, logistics, safety concerns, and system designed around the base isolation system.
The utilities going into the building had been carefully designed and built to accommodate laid pipe between a building that is not isolated and one that is. Pipe movement inside the hospital was coordinated to ensure pipes do not collide with other overhead systems during a seismic event.
